The Catholic Church in Tamil Nadu occupies a place of singular importance within the life and mission of the Church in India. Blessed with a rich apostolic heritage, a vibrant ecclesial tradition, and an enduring missionary spirit, the Church in Tamil Nadu has been an influential force in proclaiming the Gospel and promoting integral human development for centuries. Today, it stands as one of the most dynamic and well-organized ecclesiastical regions in the country, distinguished by its unwavering commitment to evangelization, pastoral renewal, education, social transformation, and ecclesial communion.

The Church in Tamil Nadu comprises eighteen Latin Rite dioceses and four Oriental Rite dioceses, forming one of the largest Catholic communities in India. The eighteen Latin dioceses are organized under three Metropolitan Archdioceses, each shepherded by an Archbishop and assisted by their respective suffragan Bishops. More than 1,523 diocesan and religious priests faithfully minister in over 1,300 parishes, besides innumerable mission stations and substations spread across cities, towns, villages, coastal regions, tribal settlements, and remote rural communities. They are generously supported by thousands of women and men religious, catechists, pastoral workers, and committed lay faithful who actively participate in the Church's mission.
